Walter van Beirendonck AW1988 "Shoot the Moon" Sweater
Walter’s fall 1988 collection borrowed from an eclectic blend of influences. Hand-drawn pictograms derived from ancient Aztec and Mayan paintings were a prevalent experiment, and can be seen on this sweater, channeled into the visuals of his pet dog Sado, and other figures. The collection, titled "Shoot the Moon, Shoot the Sun, Be a Star” had a rather hallucinogenic quality to its presentation, with the lookbook featuring collages that appeared influenced by the surrealism movement, a notion furthered by the showcasing of a figure possessing only a massive mouth for a face. The collection represented both a beginning and an end of sorts — it was the final season the Antwerp Six presented their collections together, yet also Walter’s first tangible commercial success. It was extremely popular with the youth within the New Beat movement, and marked the first time Walter moved hundreds of units of any individual piece. This oversized sweater was a signature release from the collection, highlighting the aforementioned hand-drawn pictograms, and was featured prominently in the campaign, worn by Walter himself.
